New American Painting
New American Painting was a solo exhibition at the University of Washington in May 2015. This work challenges conventional hierarchies and constructs of value in contemporary art. In response to contemporary trends in painting and ceramics (especially that of ‘zombie abstraction’ or ‘casual painting’), three-dimensional ceramic paintings are pitted against their digitally painted counterparts. The ceramic cylinder–haphazardly painted with bright glaze and gold luster–is fired an average of 6 times before it is flattened into a painting on canvas by way of being photographed in panorama mode on my iPhone. Accompanying this work is a survey, which acts as an exhibition statement and a means of researching the conceptual nature of the work. This research fueled the essay Crisis of the Cylinder.
